These rough dams are cut from kiln-ready firebrick, and are designed as the 2nd layer of dams (they sit behind our ultra-smooth dams). To buy our smooth dams and rough brick dams as a set, check out our kiln dam half-sets.
Rough (Firebrick) Dams - Benefits & Suggestions:
- Provides great weighting and heat distribution for thick panels. (Great also for thicker frit-based compositions.)
- Dams should generally extend at least 1-2" beyond the edge of the glass. For an 8" x 10" glass project use one 10" pair and one 12" pair of ultra-smooth dams (for a total of four dams), with the same lengths for the rough brick 2nd layer. These dams are sold in pairs.
- Note: If your dams are too much longer than the glass, they may extend out so much they no longer fit on your kiln shelf.

Rough firebrick dams are approximately 1.25" x 1.25" and come in lengths of 3", 6", 7", and 9". For longer dams, but multiple sets and place them end to end.
For larger or thicker work (larger than 12"x12" or taller than 9 layers), you may need 2 sets of rough firebricks for additional weight control.
